چکیده
Abstract While active systems possess notable potential to form the foundation of new classes autonomous materials (Zhang et al 2021 Nat. Rev. Mater. 6 437), designing that can extract functional work from surroundings has proven challenging. In this work, we extend these efforts realm designed liquid crystal/colloidal composites. We propose suspending colloidal particles with Janus anchoring conditions in an nematic medium. These passive become effectively self-propelled once immersed into bath. The self-propulsion arises effective +1/2 topological charge their surface enforces on surrounding fluid. analytically study dynamics and orientational dependence position a companion −1/2 defect. predict at sufficiently small activity, colloid defect remain bound each other, strongly orienting propel either parallel or perpendicular nematic. At high unbinding colloid/defect pair. This demonstrates how engineered colloids crystals may present path extracting activity drive functionality.

Self-propelled Janus particles in a ratchet: numerical simulations.
Brownian transport of self-propelled overdamped microswimmers (like Janus particles) in a two-dimensional periodically compartmentalized channel is numerically investigated for different compartment geometries, boundary collisional dynamics, and particle rotational diffusion. The resulting time-correlated active Brownian motion is subject to rectification in the presence of spatial asymmetry. W...

We study numerically the phases and dynamics of a dense collection of self-propelled particles with soft repulsive interactions in two dimensions. The model is motivated by recent in vitro experiments on confluent monolayers of migratory epithelial and endothelial cells. The phase diagram exhibits a liquid phase with giant number fluctuations at low packing fraction φ and high self-propulsion s...

Spherical Janus particles are one of the most prominent examples for active Brownian objects. Here, we study the diffusiophoretic motion of such microswimmers in experiment and in theory. Three stages are found: simple Brownian motion at short times, superdiffusion at intermediate times, and finally diffusive behavior again at long times. These three regimes observed in the experiments are comp...

متن کاملThe collective dynamics of self - propelled particles
We have proposed a method for the dynamic simulation of a collection of self-propelled particles in a viscous Newtonian fluid. We restrict attention to particles whose size and velocity are small enough that the fluid motion is in the creeping flow regime. We have proposed a simple model for a self-propelled particle, and extended the Stokesian Dynamics method to conduct dynamic simulations of ...
